English speaking films seen in 2025

Filmed stories remain a major source of enjoying life.  You can also learn valuable lessons.  Some of these films were turned into their own blog posts, some of that reflecting my positive view, others for convenience.  In other words read this fuller list includes films that deserve attention, but everyone has their own bias as do I.

 Modern Features

"Gladiator II" (2024) A different plot than "Gladiator" (2000)).  Gory and action oriented there is a story with possibilities.

"September 5" (2025) Based on the Munich Massacre during the 1972 Olympics.  I was 24 at the time, not yet married and working with the circulation department in Oakville and followed the events.  This film deals with the ABC television crew who had been hired to cover the sports events.  When the shooting started they were caught off guard, but responded quickly.  The headquarters wanted the news crew to take over, but the sports crew was already there.  They ran into the German police, but brushed them off. When the terrorists realized they were being televised they forced the police to back off.  The German police were not trained to deal with terrorism and had been concerned about displaying a military posture.   The film gives a good view of how a television crew works behind the camera.

"We Live in Time "(2024) An enjoyable romance with not quite a happy ending.

"The Substance" (2024) A horror movie that caught me off guard.  A redeeming feature was that it was critical of our beauty culture.

"Sound of Freedom" (2023).  An inspiring film that I thought would be a good blog post.  Unfortunately although based on a true story of a man rescuing victims of child sex trafficking there were a number of distortions that made me back away.  Still a good film with a message. Much Spanish dialogue.

"The Apprentice" (2024)   Based on Donald Trump in his early business days.  Lots of familiar habits are revealed. Roy Cohn's influence is critical. See http://www.therealjohndavidson.com/2025/06/a-bit-on-how-trump-got-to-be-trump.html

"The Wedding Banquet" (2025) A remake of Ang Lee's classic, but set in America.  A couple of lesbians and a couple of gay men are friends leaned on each other.  Weddings and pregnancies complicate matter.  A Korean grandmother is the most sane one.

"Heretic" (2024) is a horror film, most unusual for me.  The first part was a cynical view of religion, which I pretty much agreed with.  I have adopted that idea from Yuval Noah Hariri that religions are really stories meant to control people.  After the religious discussions the story transitioned to a horror film.  I am not the sort that enjoys horror who who can laugh it off.  So be warned.

Patience (2025) Partnering a police officer with autistic woman in criminal records.  The autistic notices little details missed by others and also does research to help solve crimes.  Part of the drama is provided by the police department and their initial skeptism and inability to deal with autistic idiosyncrasies.  Filmed with a Belgian company, several commentators stating the Belgian original was superior, but I thought well done.

"Death of a Salesman" (1985).  Arthur Miller classic.  Somewhat cliche--traveling salesman past his prime.  Flashbacks (used in stage production).  Going downhill--two adult sons drifting.  Learn that in the past Willy had failed his son who had just failed a math test and we had been told willing to make an effort to fix it.  see http://www.therealjohndavidson.com/2025/07/death-of-salesman.html

"The Cowboy and the Queen" (2024) brought back a pleasurable personal connection.  Monty Roberts had a lot of critics, but his credibility was boosted by Queen Elizabeth.  I once saw in person Monty do a demonstration "joining up" with an untrained horse.  see http://www.therealjohndavidson.com/2025/08/the-cowboy-and-queen.html

"The Croods" (2013) The original.  Unfortunately I got a bad copy, but feel it captured some of production seen in the sequel.

"How to Train Your Dragon 2" (2014) Delightful.  Animation superb.  Okay plot.  Pleasant music.

"K Pop Demon Hunters" (2025) Mostly in English with a few Korean words.  Girl Pop singers are also demon hunters who involved with Boy Pop singers.

"Abominable" (2019) Enjoyable cinematography.  Interesting story.

"Megamind" (2010)  What people do to attract attention (and the opposite sex).  Looks are critical, but personality can be just as important.  Enjoyable.

Shorts

"Forgive Us Our Trespasses" (2022)  Only 13 minute, but reminded us that the Nazis under Hitler felt disabled people were less than human and killed many of them.

"The Only Girl in the Orchestra" (2024) The woman hired full time for the New York Philharmonic.  Her instrument was the double bass.  Won an Oscar.

"The After" (2023) A man witnesses the death of his wife and daughter.  Later as a fair ride driver he sees a young women who looks like his daughter would have looked a year or two later.

"The Quilters"   (2025) Features long term prisoners who make quilts for foster children.  They see it as a purpose when their lives seems wasted.

"The Dads" (2023) Only 11 minutes concerning 5 dads of trans kids who talked briefly about their adjustments and support for their children.  The fathers were of different races and home bases.  Masculinity was questioned of them.  Interesting that an executive producer was Dwayne Wade who is also a father of a trans child and has spoken out on their behalf.

"Extremis" (2016) Documentary set in hospital with patients (and their families) having to make very difficult medical situations; a procedure could prolong their life, but increase suffering or diminish consciousness.

"Fish War" (2024) tells history of Indian tribes fighting the right to fish salmon. A court judgment was ignored by Washington state.  Eventually after much court activity they reached a stage of co-operation with non Indians.  Now, however  everyone's concern is climate change that threatens the fish  and the environment.

"Between Earth & Sky" (2023) Story of woman studying very large trees and climbing them after surviving a serious fall.  Gorgeous scenery in Costa Rica.

"Mosiah" (2023) mostly covers a court case fighting against racism.  He was deported after the trial although a jury only convicted him on 1 of 26 charges.

"Famous Last Words Jane Goodall" (2025) A new concept in the English speaking world and this allowed a gentle woman to give us some personal details and opinions.  http://www.therealjohndavidson.com/2025/10/jane-goodall-and-her-famous-last-words.html

"All the Empty Rooms" (2025)  A reporter got tired of presenting good news stories  at the end of newscasts that in some cases showed the parents of school shooting victims adjusting.  He felt it deserved more attention and decided to visit these parents and photograph their bedrooms.  One line was that he thought more people should just look at one of these rooms and their attitudes would be affected.  See the 2nd feature at http://www.therealjohndavidson.com/2025/12/two-unrelated-films-that-deserve-more.html

If your favorite movie of 2025 wasn't mentioned please feel free to tell me and why you think checking it is a good idea.
